Two police officers have been arrested and detained after participating an alcohol drinking competetion.
Corporal Nelson Arinaitwe and Constable Wycliffe Alaza are attached to Kanungu Central Police Station in Kanungu District.
The two officers reportedly participated in waragi-drinking competition on September 27 which resulted into the death of one person. Waragi is locally-brewed potent gin.
The deceased has been identified as Frank Kambarekye alias Kashani of Burondo Cell, Southern Ward in Kanungu Town Council.
According to Police, the drinking competition attracted six people; five of whom were hospitalised after swallowing excessive quantities of waragi.
Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, Mr Elly Maate says the group of six were drinking at Odira’s Bar when one of the patrons offered to sponsor a waragi-drinking competition.
The prize would be taken by a contestant who could gulp six glasses of waragi ahead of others. Each glass measured about 300 milliliters.
Six people, including the two police officers joined the competition. As the contestants swallowed glass after glass, they all became intoxicated and were hospitalised at Katete Health Centre Four in bad condition. This is where a one Kambarekye died.
The Police officers were arrested on Sunday after their health stabilised.
Mr Maate says the cops will be charged with conspiring to commit a crime yet their primary responsibility is to keep law and order.
Mr Maate says other suspects who participated in the competition escaped from the health centre after regaining consciousness.
