LIRA: Two soldiers are reportedly dead after a nasty road accident that occurred near Ogur Trading Centre in Lira District on Saturday afternoon.

The unidentified victims were from Acolpii Barracks, Pader District, and were heading towards Lira Town.

Eyewitnesses said the accident happened when an army truck carrying some soldiers overturned several times as it attempted to avoid head-on collision with one of the motorcade of a wedding procession at Ogur.

“The truck lost control after hitting a deep pothole and overturned killing two unidentified soldiers at the spot and injuring many others,” an eyewitness said. The victim bodies have been taken to Lira army barracks.

The soldiers reportedly impounded the wedding vehicle that caused the accident. By press time, the coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation for Erute north, Col Smith Ayo, was reported to be holding negotiations between the soldiers and the wedding team whose vehicles allegedly caused the accident.

The UPDF 5 division spokesman Capt Lawrence Draga confirmed the accident but said he was in Fort Portal.

He said only one soldier out of five who sustained serious injuries died at Lira hospital where they were rushed for medication. However, he did not reveal the identity of the soldier who died. But civilians who spoke to this reporter at the scene put the figure of the casualties to two.

Capt Draga said the truck was carrying soldiers and logistical items from 5 division headquarters in Acholpii and heading to western Uganda.
