Police are investigating incidents in which two suspects died in custody in different areas of Kampala Metropolitan.
The first suspect died at Kyengera Police Station in Rubaga Division last Friday while another died at Kiwatule Police Station in Nakawa Division last Wednesday.
Mr Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, yesterday confirmed the deaths, saying: “True, the two incidents happened and the Kampala Metropolitan Police commander has asked for an investigation, which is still ongoing.”
Mr Onyango said the office-in-charge of Kyengera Police Station and the OC in charge of Criminal Investigations Department have been arrested as detectives continue to investigate the matter. One of the suspects, it is said, was beaten by residents as he tried to escape from police custody after he had been arrested over rape.
“The suspect was put in the cell instead of being taken to hospital to get treatment,” Mr Onyango said.
The other suspect in Kiwatule, according Mr Onyango, who had been arrested for failing to pay Shs800,000 allegedly used a belt to hang himself. Police want to know why he was allowed to enter cells with a belt.
The incidents come weeks after Mr Andrew Felix Kaweesi, the commander Kampala Metropolitan Police, warned officers to desist from using cells as torture chambers.
