UMSC promises pay for district Kadhis

KAMPALA
For the first time in history, district Kadhis in Uganda will smile back home with a salary starting in June next year, the Mufti of Uganda has revealed.
Sheikh Ramadan Mubajje, the official head of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), made the revelation during a meeting with the Kadhis last week.
The Mufti observed that these men of God have been spreading the gospel using personal resources.
“Muslims in Uganda are more united today than ever before . This I should say, is because of you people at the districts who have played a vital role in this cause,” Mr Mubajje said and added, “Today we have minimal conflicts between the Muslim youths of the Tabliqs and Salafiyyah sect and the elder traditional Muslims as compared to the 1990s.”
Currently there are 54 UMSC district Kadhis who act as official representatives of the Mufti at the grass root level. They are also responsible for extending UMSC services down to the people and collecting concerns of the people back to officials at Old Kampala.
The Kadhis are not paid salaries or allowances despite the Mufti recognizing their work as “a tremendous job.”
The chairman UMSC, Dr Abdulkadir Balonde urged the Kadhis to enforce supreme council’s policies without prejudicing the teachings of Islam and the UMSC constitution.
Hajj Balonde appealed to the Kadhis to concentrate on serving the Ummah (Muslim community) and asked them to always consult with the UMSC constitution for guidance whenever need arises.
The meeting was also attended by some of the senior supreme council’s management. The Kadhis pledged to work with other faith leaders and local government leaders to foster unity and development in their respective areas.
“If this promise (of pay) materializes, it will make our work easier and provide a basis to root for development and unity with the other religion leaders and the community at large,” said Sheikh Abdallah Sabila, the Sebei district Kadhi.
Mr Mubajje also informed the District Kadhis that to iron out the ramblings in the UMSC management affairs, all possible efforts are underway for all major top organs meet before the end of this year. The organs include the Executive Committee, Majilis Ulama (the council of eminent Sheikhs), the Joint Session and the General Assembly.
