UNEB’s Bukenya bids emotional farewell

Outgoing UNEB secretary Mathew Bukenya

Kampala. The 20-year-old reign of Mr Mathew Bukenya, as the Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) executive secretary has come to an end, with the official giving an emotional farewell.
Mr Bukenya, who took over the mantle in 1997, said the release of the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Examinations (UACE) results yesterday was his final task as Uneb secretary.
“Honourable minister, ladies and gentlemen, I wish to take this opportunity to bid farewell to you,” Mr Bukenya said at a function presided over by the Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Ms Jessica Alupo.
“I shall soon be retiring [effective April] from Uneb work and this is the last examination I am releasing,” he added.

The new face
Mr Daniel Odongo, the current Uneb deputy secretary in charge of secondary school examinations, will take over from Mr Bukenya. Mr Bukenya’s tenure in office expired on April 17 in 2014. The board then renewed his contract from April 18, 2014, to November 30, 2015, arguing that this would allow a smooth transition and ensure the stability of the institution.
A fierce row erupted and the process to replace him collapsed after the Inspector General of Government halted it following accusations that the regulations had been flouted by the then Uneb chairperson, Mr Fagil Mandy.
Subsequently, President Museveni renewed Mr Bukenya’s contract for another two years that have now run out.

Bukenya's speech
I thank the almighty God for all the support and providence, during the time we have worked together. I am grateful to the government for the support it rendered to Uneb during my tenure.
I also extend appreciation to the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, government ministries and departments, districts officials, area supervisors, head teachers, teachers and all examination field personnel, the media and the security agencies for the unwavering support rendered to me, and Uneb.
Just like you have supported me, I pray for your continued support to my successor.
Fare well to you all, and may God bless you abundantly.
