A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier has been admitted to Dokolo health centre IV after he was beaten into coma by residents who accused him of killing a civilian.
The soldier identified as Moses Ogwal was rescued by police and rushed to the government health facility in critical condition on Monday.
He was attacked after the death of Boniface Aluku, whose body was discovered along the road by residents who were going to their gardens on May 21, 2018.
The North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, Mr David Ongom Mudong, said the soldier reportedly picked a quarrel with Aluku at a drinking joint at Beobwol village, Dokolo District on Sunday.
After the quarrel, it is reported that the duo left the joint and fought along the way. The soldier thereafter reported to the chairperson LC I of the village, Mr Geoffrey Okure that someone fought him along the way and fled. He was advised to go home until the following day when the matter would be handled.
On Monday morning, shocked residents going to their gardens found Aluku’s body along the road and they mobilised themselves to arrest the soldier. He was found at his home sleeping and beaten into coma.
“He was rescued by police and rushed to Dokolo health centre where he is admitted under tight security. But he’s still into coma. Inquiries are underway,” Mr Ongom added.
