Police in Luweero Distict have arrested six UPDF soldiers for storming Kampala University, Luweero campus, and disarming the university security guards in an operation police claimed was irregular.
The six soldiers, who were still under police custody by press time yesterday, reportedly stormed the campus at 9:30am. The soldiers are said to have bundled the guards on a Luweero District Local Government double cabin pick-up before dumping them at Luweero Central Police station. They were, however, also rounded up by police before they could go far.
“We have the six soldiers in our custody because we could not just look on as they engage in irregular activities in the area,” Mr Godfrey Ninsiima, the district police commander, said.
A police officer who preferred anonymity told the Daily Monitor that police were yet to find out from the soldiers on whose orders they were acting and reasons why they never sought permission from Luweero police.
Army spokesperson Lt Col Paddy Ankunda has said the arrested soldiers will answer for their actions as individuals and not as UPDF. “We do not entertain any acts that break the laws of the country,” he said.
