The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has published a list of 178 top tax defaulters to compel them to clear their outstanding arrears before being dragged to court in seven days.

According to the tax body, the defaulters named in the “shame lists” have a total tax liability of nearly Shs26 billion.
URA has collection targets of Shs8.5 trillion, but with just days left to close the financial year, the tax body is grappling with shortfalls of Shs300 billion.

“In a move to redeem unpaid taxes as the Financial Year closes, URA has listed 178 top tax defaulters in what is known as the “shamelist,” reads part of the statement issued yesterday by the tax body.

Defaulters
URA’s manager in charge of debt collection Abudu Salaam Waiswa said the named tax defaulters, include Steel Rolling Mills Ltd, Linksoft Communication Systems (U) Ltd and Akright Projects Ltd.

“The arrears of those named have been accumulating overtime but have remained defiant in settling their tax liability despite several reminders to pay up,” Mr Waiswa said.

“Accordingly, these have been granted up to seven days from the date of notice (yesterday) to clear their outstanding debts or face enforcement actions including but not limited to closure of their business premises, seizure of their property as well as personal property or face prosecution for not paying taxes,” he added.
