UTL Managing Director resigns

Mr Ali Amir

Kampala.
Uganda Telecom (UTL) has today announced the resignation of its Managing Director, Ali Amir. Mr Amir will be leaving UTL after less than two years of his service at the helm of the company.
“Ali Amir, Managing Director and board member at Uganda Telecom (UTL), has resigned from both roles citing personal reasons,” a statement from UTL reads in part.
UTL has not had it smooth sailing since 2011, when the war that ousted Muammer Gaddafi in Libya started. The Libyan Government through LAP Green Networks owns majority stake in UTL. Amir is the third Managing Director since 2011. His departure puts a dent to efforts to revive the telecom.
According to the statement, however, Mr Amir is credited for helping in the recovery of the telecom.
“During his tenure at UTL, Ali was able to significantly reduce the continuous year on year revenue slide and improved the profitability of the Company significantly over the last three years,” it reads.
Mr Stephen Kaboyo, the UTL Chairman thanked Ali for his “untiring efforts to continue the UTL turnaround despite such challenging circumstances.”
LAP Green Networks revealed that a new Managing Director will be nominated in “the next few weeks.”
Mr Amir joined UTL in 2012, and rose to Managing Director position a year later. He described his time at the telecom as having been a “tremendous journey.”
