Gulu. Uganda joined the rest of the world to commemorate the International Criminal Justice (ICJ) day last Friday at Lukodi, in Gulu District.
Lukodi is synonymous with the Lukodi massacres, a place where LRA’s warlord Dominic Ongwen is suspected to have overseen the massacre of more than 40 people who were taking refugee in an Internally Displaced Persons camp plus burning down their huts.
Ms Maria Mabinty Kamara, the International Criminal Court (ICC) outreach coordinator for Kenya and Uganda, justified why this year’s celebrations were held at Lukodi, which is located about 15 Km from Gulu Town.
She explained that since Lukodi is the exact place that Mr Ongwen allegedly commanded his rebels to massacre several people as well as burning down their huts during the two-decade insurgency in northern Uganda, it was timely to hold this year’s celebrations at the backyard of his alleged victims.
Ongwen, who is currently at the Hague-based court (ICC), faces three counts of crimes against humanity and four counts of war crimes for his alleged attack on Lukodi IDP camp in May 2004 during the Joseph Kony Lords Resistance Army insurgency.
