Uganda should step up fight against corruption, says South Korean envoy

Mr Park Jong Dae, the South Korean ambassador to Uganda has appealed to the government to put in more effort in fighting corruption and ensure that public services are delivered in a transparent manner.
He was delivering his remarks at the official launching of Nsamu Community Centre worth Shs165million, constructed by residents with support from Korea International Corporation Agency (KOICA) at Nsamu Village in Mpigi Town Council last weekend.
“Uganda is gifted with almost many of the natural resources and a good environment that can create more wealth but corruption is still a major challenge. To gain socio-economic development, civil workers should serve the people and avoid corruption. Let the government prioritize the fight against the vice, civil servants should stop misusing public funds and let all of us be initiators of rural development projects to attain sustainable growth to change our villages,” Mr Park said.
The ambassador said that for a country to attract more investors there should be transparency and accountability.
“Be a community member who can add value to others, promote mindset change through volunteering and doing community services (bulungi bwansi) to achieve core goals for development,” he added.
He also unveiled a foundation stone for water works in the area under Saemaul Undong (new village movement) practice and the project will benefit at least 700 people and 174 homesteads with safe and clean water.

“We should empower women to engage in all public works because they seem to be more reliable, confident and determined to serve well. We shouldn’t forget to be committed in support of our vision 2040 to get better health care, good education standards, infrastructural development and stability in our country,” Hajji Wagwa said.
