Uganda Investment Authority has commissioned two companies to start car production in the country by 2018.
The companies are Kiira Motors Corporation owned by Makerere University College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology and China Engineering Limited.
They have been allocated 100 and 60 acres of land respectively in Kagogwa village in Kakira Town Council, Jinja District.
Speaking during the hand over ceremony of the land in Jinja District yesterday, the acting executive director for Uganda Investment Authority, Dr Francis Ssebowa, warned the companies against producing poor quality cars.
“We are giving you this land today with a hope of getting the best car products that will be admired by every one in the world,’’ he said.
He said the government expects to get revenue and employment for its people in the factories being created.
Dr Ssebowa said the China-based company has been limited to production of only pick-up cars to avoid unnecessary competition.
