Ugandan police officer wins UN medal in South Sudan

KAMPALA.

United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Police Commissioner Dr Fred Yiga has been given a medal for his commitment, exemplary duties and allegiance towards peace building in the world’s newest nation, South Sudan.

Mr Yiga, who doubles as the Assistant Inspector General of Police in Uganda Police Force in UNMISS compound in Juba, the capital of South Sudan was on Thursday given the medal by the Special Representative of the Secretary General for UNMISS, Ms Hilde Johnson during the commemoration of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, celebrated every May 29 annually.

Mr. Yiga joined UNMISS as Police Commissioner in May 2012 and currently commands over 1000 police officers from 39 Police contributing countries.

South Sudan Minister of Cabinet affairs, Mr Martin Elia Lomoro, graced the event with his attendance.

Uganda has hundreds of officers serving as peacekeepers in Southern Sudan.
