Kampala- Ugandans should consume more locally-made goods than imported ones since that is one realistic way to create employment, President Museveni has said.
The President said buying Ugandan-made products will also boost revenue and facilitate economic growth. “Each time one buys an imported product, it means that he/she is denying a Ugandan an employment opportunity,” he said.
He added: “We need to address the issue of glorifying foreign products when there is an equally suitable local product available. Our mind must be decolonised, at the same time our local industries should be able to add value, innovate, employ and grow our economy—not until then we will not realise the dream of prosperity for all.”
He added: “…I must emphasize that in order to compete, we must produce good quality products and delivered it on time as well.”
The President was speaking during the opening of the 21st International Trade Fair at Lugogo on Friday. Uganda Manufacturers Association, the organiser of the trade show, is this year running the event from October 2 to October 10, under the theme, “Accelerating trade and industrial growth”.
Mr Museveni further said the challenge to create and sustain jobs should not be left to manufactures and government alone, as the public has the biggest role to facilitate that process.
