The fate of at least 1,603 students, whose Primary Leaving Examinations results were withheld by Uganda National Examinations Board over malpractices will be determined by an exams security committee from today.

Mr Mathew Bukenya, the Uneb secretary, yesterday said the committee will investigate the blacklisted schools’ alleged involvement in cheating.
Mr Bukenya said by mid-February, the committee would have wrapped up the job.

“We want results of those students cleared of malpractices re-released early enough for them to start school and those who will be found guilty to know their fate early enough, too,” he said.

A total of 1,603 students’ results in 43 schools were blacklisted for indulging in malpractices, ranging from securing external assistance, substitution, smuggling suspected question answers into the examination rooms, collusion and impersonation.

Most schools, whose results are pending, are located up-country in Luweero (six schools), Kyenjojo (seven schools) and Wakiso (three schools) districts, among others.

Meanwhile, despite an improvement in this year’s performance, examination incidents of cheating has increased by 376, up from 1,227 cases in 2011, 62 in 2010 and 616 in 2009.

Uneb deployed a total of 8,774 scouts to oversee and monitor the examination sitting centres across the country.
