Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) in Kabarole District has designed a public awareness programme to protect the environment in the Rwenzori sub-region.
The package involves using Mpanga Game designed to create a change in their livelihood and protect the natural resources, especially River Mpanga that emanates from Mount Rwenzori and snakes through several districts in the sub-region.
According to Mr Clovise Kabaseke, a lecturer at the university, the game is different from others because everyone is a winner.
“Every player wants to achieve, at the end of the game it identifies the problem of every human activity done on the river and also gets a solution,” Mr Kabaseke said at the game inauguration workshop in Fort Portal on Tuesday.
Fort Portal Municipality MP Alex Ruhunda promised to market the idea and lobby Parliament to invite MMU officials to present it to the House.
MMU decided to design the game to protect River Mpanga after a report from the district environment and natural resources department showed that there is over exploitation and degrading of the river.
Mr Gerald Twebaze, the speaker for Kamwenge District, also urged to residents to embrace the project.
