KAMPALA- Victoria University has announced that it intends to seek a new foreign university affiliation.
Business mogul, Sudhir Ruparelia who early this month took over ownership of the university, revealed in a telephone interview yesterday, that he still believes in the university’s foundation and wants legacy of affiliation to another stronger institution upheld.
“We are still establishing roots and promoting the new foundation, but certainly we have to get an affiliation,” he said.
Affiliation is the process in which a big established university allows a smaller one to teach courses complying to its standards.
Origin of university
Victoria University was established in 2011 by Edulink Holdings Limited, a private company that invests internationally in tertiary institutions of higher learning as an affiliate of the University of Buckingham.
It, however, lost its relationship with the affiliate in late 2012 against a backdrop of Uganda’s discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
Mr Sudhir noted: “For the meantime, we are hosting the University at Engen Mansions on Jinja Road, but we shall eventually construct a new Campus at the former Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) headquarters in Kitante.”
Mr Ruparelia also outlined plans to invest Shs26billion in the business turnaround of the institution; to focus on the local curriculum in the first few years before turning to the affiliation.
“Even after our new affiliation, the university will remain a truly Uganda institution that can stand on its own,” he said.
