We did not withdraw Mbabazi's passport- Immigration department

The Immigration department has been tasked to explain circumstances under which former Prime minister Amama Mbabazi's diplomatic passport was allegedly withdrawn.

This follows reports that the ex-prime minister had his diplomatic passport withdrawn after he was sacked from the position a month ago.

While meeting the public accounts committee, the director of Citizenship and immigration Godfrey Sasaga dismissed the claim that Mbabazi's passport had been withdrawn although he promised to investigate the allegations and report back to the committee. He however said that the issue of recalling passports is a policy matter for which, the department would only require cabinet approval.

"We have not withdrawn their [Mbabazi and his wife] diplomatic passports,” Mr Sasaga said, adding: “For us to do that, we need clearance from Cabinet. That information is not correct; we have not done that and I am not aware.” Mr Sesaga said.

Although the law which provides for benefits of retired Prime Ministers (The Emoluments and Benefits of the President, Vice President and Prime Minister Act) doesn't talk about diplomatic passports, former Prime Minister Apollo Nsibambi says he still holds his diplomatic passport.

“Of course I still have it.” he responded when asked whether he still holds a diplomatic passport. A former Prime Minister must have a diplomatic passport.” Nzibambi said.

Committee members also demanded that the immigration department compiles a list of people who hold diplomatic passports and the procedure used to determine who is entitled to one.
