ENTEBBE/KAMPALA- Suspected criminals yesterday shot dead an assistant commissioner in the ministry of Works at his home in Entebbe, Wakiso District, as another armed gang attacked the residence of the ex-principal accountant in the Office of the Prime Minister in Bukoto, a Kampala suburb.
Police say they are still hunting for the unknown suspects that shot Patrick Balaamu Busuti, the assistant commissioner for road maintenance.
Officers say though the motive for the killing was not yet known, it seems the assailants had only gone to take the victim’s life.
Kampala Metropolitan Police commander Andrew Felix Kaweesi said forensic experts had been sent to the crime scene at the victim’s home near Anderita Beach in Entebbe, to pick evidence that will help them get clues.
“The suspects were wearing masks when they committed the crime, so they remain unknown. But we are following some leads,” Mr Kaweesi said yesterday. Busuti is one of the hundreds of people murdered by shooting annually in the country.
Mr Kaweesi believes the criminals cut razor wires on top of the wall to gain access to the residence at around 3am. “They climbed onto the roof and removed a few tiles to create a passage in the ceiling,” he said.
“Unfortunately, none of the members in the house heard any noise as the suspects were gaining access.”
Mr James Mulumba, a neighbour who was among the first people to reach the scene, believes suspects used a rope to climb down into the house. “We found a rope near a hole in the ceiling near Busuti’s bedroom,” Mr Mulumba said.
The suspects allegedly entered Busuti’s bedroom and shot him in the chest.
Mr Emmanuel Balaam, a son of the deceased, who was not at home at the time of the shooting, said his mother told him the suspects went to her bedroom to wake them up.
“At first, they asked for money and they were told there wasn’t any cash but they didn’t persist. They then asked her to open for them the door and when she opened, they went their ways,” Mr Balaam said. A few minutes later, Basuti’s wife pressed the alarm which attracted the police and private security guards, though it was too late.
Kazinda’s home raided
Meanwhile, at former principal accountant Geoffrey Kazinda’s home, security officers shot dead one unidentified suspect and recovered an SMG with 25 bullets and other stolen gadgets.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman Ibin Ssenkumbi said the suspects accessed the house at about midnight and picked laptops and several boxes containing documents.
“One of the occupants sneaked out and called the police. Our officers responded immediately and their attempts to tell the suspects to surrender were futile after the thugs started shooting at them [police],” Mr Ssenkumbi said.
In the exchange of fire, one suspect was shot dead and the other abandoned their loot and fled the scene undetected.
“We have arrested two guards at the residence because we suspect connivance. We are also looking for another who is on the run,” Mr Ssenkumbi said.
