Former Vice president Prof Gilbert Bukenya has taken a stance at his critics, saying he has a right to support any candidate of his choice.
Speaking in Luganda dialect, Prof Bukenya on Tuesday maintained that he has not joined the leading party National Resistance Movement (NRM) like his critics claim but only intends to support Mr Museveni as a presidential candidate in the 2016 elections.

“I did not take any money like many of my adversaries have said. I left The Democratic Alliance (TDA) because none of the members there was willing to answer my questions. I had gone to TDA to look for wisdom. Unfortunately, I did not find any as most of the members had selfish interests,” he said.
Prof Bukenya made the remarks while addressing his supporters at his home in Kakiri, Wakiso district.

According to him, neither FDC presidential flag bearer Dr Kizza Besigye nor Go Forward’s Amama Mbabazi could offer him any convincing answers on what they intend to do to overcome the challenges of poverty, land wrangles and youth unemployment, among others.
“ I was so demoralized when the opposition failed to offer any convincing solutions to the above challenges of Buganda and Uganda yet my intentions were to develop Buganda and Uganda as a whole,” he said, adding,” shortly after giving up my chase for the presidential seat, president Museveni approached me with better answers.”

Prof Bukenya said he first met president Museveni in his (Museveni's) car because he didn’t want any one, especially the media to get wind of what their meeting was about.
“ But I first weighed his options before deciding to support Museveni. Those who say I took money or consulted a witchdoctor before making up my mind to support him (president Museveni) have no brains to run this country. When I met with president Museveni, we agreed on a number of issues and he made many promises to me on how he will fight poverty and land issues, a reason as to why I decided to support him,” he added. This follows reports that Prof Bukenya who had two weeks ago said Mr Museveni has nothing new to offer to Ugandans and would just exploit them, has made a U-turn and said he would now support Mr Museveni.
Prof Bukenya who had been nursing presidential ambitions in the next elections said “there’s no other candidate with ideas on how to develop this country other than the incumbent president.
