Twelve people were killed Monday when the minibus they were travelling in plunged into Lake Victoria in northern Tanzania, according to a statement from the presidency.
President John Magufuli said he was "very shocked and deeply saddened at the news of the death of 12 people when their vehicle tipped into" Africa's largest lake, which also spreads into Uganda and Kenya.
The statement said the vehicle was on its way to drop passengers at a ferry station when it left the road and plunged into the lake.
Three passengers were saved by witnesses to the accident, local media reported.
