Fire is one of the biggest calamities Ugandan markets have faced of recent. The causes of these fires have been associated with short circuits, cooking fires and carelessness of some vendors.

Billions of shillings is, as a result, lost. Market vendors must therefore consider insurance cover to ensure that their businesses are safe. The amount of money and property lost in market fires deters development and may lead owners of destroyed businesses to bankruptcy.

Most of the vendors have acquired loans to set up these businesses so insurance would save them a great deal. Alternatively, let the government take over the markets, and the burden of insurance cover is transferred to the government.

Relying on well wishers to rebuild the markets is not sustainable. The damage would be done and the worth of your business can never be reclaimed through donations from sympathisers.
