CCTV cameras are useless without lights

The President’s directive to have CCTV cameras installed in the city to beef surveillance will be pointless without streetlights.CCTV camera technology cannot work without functional street lights and a steady power supply.
As the government moves to finalise the tendering process to purchase the CCTV camera system, it needs to consider the lowest bidder with reliable technology.
Technocrats who negotiate government deals should be well vast with knowledge about the latest technology required. For continuity, the power supply will also depend on a fast-tracked Karuma power project which will increase the megawatts required to run most of public utilities like street lights, operating stations and systems running the CCTV cameras.
Tracking criminals using technology is more efficient and reliable. It is also advisable to have CCTV cameras not only installed on street junctions but on and inside major public buildings. For Uganda to achieve a complete surveillance circuit, the National Identity Card project should be completed.
