On March 8, Uganda celebrated International Women’s Day and more than 70 women were honoured for the outstanding service and loyalty they have shown towards women in this country.

The year’s celebrations which were feted in Nakasongola District ran under the theme: The Gender Agenda: Connecting Grassroots Women to Development. The women were also rewarded for their contribution to the Women’s movement in Uganda. This is an implication that women emancipation and gender equality should be esteemed.

While awarding the medals, President Museveni did not only consider the NRM women achievers but also some female MPs from the opposition. This implies that in development, there is no politics. We should, therefore, focus on the issues that unite us for the development of our country.
Therefore, gender issues should not be politicised and I implore everyone to join in the exertion for women emancipation, thus promoting women in public life.
