Forest degradation must be curbed

I write in reference to the article on illegal logging in Bugoma Forest published in the Daily Monitor of September 19, in which I was quoted. My company (Destination Jungle)’s interest is not only to develop eco-tourist activities in the forest, but also to build a conservation programme to unite all the stakeholders interested in sustainable management of the forest, under the auspices of National Forestry Authority.
Your article was right to expose the horrible devastation of illegal logging in Bugoma. It is true that government bodies did not invest enough resources to protect this site. However, we hope for a more positive future.
Since the arrival of the current “team” i.e. the NFA manager and environmental police commander, so much has been done to curb illegalities. NFA now has the chance to involve stakeholders, the local communities and authorities to discuss the future of the forest. This is our interest and that of everyone who is against environmental devastation.
