In Summary

I believe our slogan “clean leadership, unity and peace,” governed his spirit right to the end.

I first met Eriya Kategaya during the UNLF government and the National Consultative Council Parliament (1979-1980).

I soon observed that he, among a few other ‘liberators’, had sincere values of seeing our country completely liberated. I was much inspired by him and others. Eventually, both of us were part of the group that formed Uganda Patriotic Movement in June, 1980.

In Kategaya, I saw a man who really loved his country, and even then, he was not just happy that Amin had been defeated and gone, but that the country must be built on real democracy and good governance, to avoid any repeat of the past.

I believe our slogan “clean leadership, unity and peace,” governed his spirit right to the end.

As a political leader, he weighed issues carefully, was gentle and tolerant with everyone, without compromising his values, and very compassionate, but standing his ground for what was best for his country and East Africa. Overall, he practiced clean leadership, unity and peace to the end of his life.

Ugandans should rightly thank God for his life. My prayer is that many young men and women, particularly lawyers and politicians (his fields) will emulate him.

I pray that his soul rests in eternal peace.
