January 2013 is when Ugandans will live to remember for the loss of this generation’s epitome of decency in every respect, James Mulwana.

Without a doubt, Mulwana is one of finest business leaders that this country has produced since independence. That is why the entire country and the East African region had to rightfully mourn his passing.

I have had an opportunity to extensively associate with Uganda Manufacturers Association and the Private Sector Foundation over the years and interracted with Mulwana. What defined him was the disarming simplicity and level headedness that is rare among many successful Ugandans.

Success in Uganda ordinarily breeds arrogance, a bossy mentality and pomp. This never crossed near Mulwana. His willingness to mentor the young and offer them growth opportunities is the reason he will always be missed in the corridors of business and trade policy negotiations or development for Uganda where he has left an indelible mark.

The key challenge that he leaves to us all is the capacity to build consistently on his enormous contributions to the country. Most importantly, should be our focus on developing credible role models that can inspire us as Mulwana did.
Then that will be the best way to celebrate his outstanding contribution to humanity.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
