I am one of the millions of people who are inspired by and is grateful to have witnessed the selfless humanity of Mandela. For once, Africa is in the global limelight for a good reason.

What is perplexing though, is how today’s African leaders are paying tribute to this great leader whose amazing qualities they do not uphold. Am I the only one who cringes at this hypocritical praise from our presidents?

It is sad that this irony is lost on our leaders in the hope that the people would be hoodwinked by the historical association of our countries with South Africa’s liberation from apartheid.

The transformation of Africa’s revolutionary leaders of the 1990s, from mini Mandelas to mini Gagdaffis could not be more poignant than at this time when we mourn the “ last great liberator of the 20th Century.
