There are many pressing issues that need to be urgently addressed in Uganda. For instance, the Cancer Institute at Mulago hospital has no drugs, teachers are paid peanuts, there is high level of corruption yet legislators have chosen to focus on the Marriage and Divorce Bill as if it is the most pressing issue!

How can you give priority to debating about cohabiting? Marital conflicts in Uganda have existed for years and couples know how to solve them. Before passing the Bill, do you have any idea what your children at university are doing? They cohabit in hostels.

Legalising cohabitation as a form of marriage will only worsen the situation. All sense of guilt will be lost. Many parents will be shocked when after two years at university, their children declare that they are married.

Let alone the disaster that will befall families when people begin to use marriage as a means of acquiring wealth since with the legalising of divorce, marriage will no longer be binding.
Before passing this Bill, evaluate the risks included.
