It is shocking to learn that about 95 per cent of the total population of girls in places such as Tepeth, Sabiny and Pokot in eastern Uganda are compelled to undergo Female Genital Mutilation in spite of government efforts to stop the vice.

According to media reports, most of the victims are between the ages of 10 – 18 years.

According to the children Act (Cap.59) of the Laws of Uganda, any person below 18 years is a child and therefore needs maximum protection. Local leaders should ensure that child abusers are apprehended and prosecuted.

FGM is a harmful practice that has led to loss of lives and poses serious reproductive health problems. Let us all join hands in the fight against FGM!
