An open letter to Umeme Ltd

Umeme workers on duty

What you need to know:

  • I do not understand why it would take such a big entity more than nine months to buy a mere transformer!

Dear Umeme Ltd,
I moved to Gayaza Namavundu, in November last year and it was during the same month that I applied for electricity connection. It took you one and a half months to finally make the connection.
On the day the connection was done, you could not even programme the Yaka metre because by the time your men were done with the connection (7pm) there was a power outage; something that had been going on for six months going by what one of the men said.

So they (the men) gave me instructions on how to programme the Yaka metre when power was eventually restored. They also said the outage was because the area transformer could not handle the load, so power in the area had to be switched off from 7pm to 11pm or midnight daily.
I raised the issue with the Bombo Branch manager and he said they were handling the issue and were going to sort us out. I waited until mid-February but nothing was done. I called him again and he promised that by mid-March they would have resolved the problem.
It is now a few days to the end of March but there are no signs of progress. Right now, thieves are taking advantage of the power outages to vandalise our property with the most recent being a raid on earthing rods in the area.

I have called you, sent you messages on Facebook, tweeted and even sent you WhatsApp messages (recent ref no m2874302) about the power outage in our area every night from the time you connected us, but you haven’t even sent anyone to attend to us.
I do not understand why it would take such a big entity more than nine months to buy a mere transformer! You keep bragging about lighting the Kampala skyline but who cares about the Kampala skyline when you can’t or won’t sort out a transformer problem for months? Umeme, please style up and do what you are paid to do.
