Pass Bill on alcohol consumption

I am pleased with Nebbi District officials for prohibiting alcohol drinking before 6pm. Like Nebbi leaders, Parliament should consider MP Odonga Otto’s proposal on alcohol that seeks to prohibit the sale of alcohol before 5pm and after 3am, and ban the plastic “sachets” of alcohol.
According to a report from World Health Organisation 2012, ethyl alcohol that Ugandans drink, kills 2.5 million people annually than Aids, malaria and tuberculosis do. Uganda is still leading in the consumption of alcohol in Africa and is the eighth in the world according to the US broadcaster Cable News Network 2013 in the report titled ‘World’s 10 best drinking nations’
Therefore, I call upon Parliament to enact a law as is the case in Kenya where former president Mwai Kibaki signed into law the Alcohol Drinks Control Bill on August 13, 2010.
I also appeal to religious leaders to continue preaching against alcohol consumption and drug abuse that are slowly but surely exterminating the productivity of the youth.
