There is need to adequately address the issue of defilement in Uganda. In a recent media report, some men in Nakaseke District defiled and killed a child and injured another. Parents are now afraid of sending their children, for instance, to shops or do chores like fetching water.

The police report for 2012 indicates that 164 defilement cases were registered in Nakaseke District alone.

In 2011, police reported 7,690 cases of defilement in Uganda. Other victims do not report the cases because they don’t think they can find justice.

The police claim they are dealing with the suspects; but why is the crime on the rise? How are the suspects being treated? Are they arrested for some time and released?

I urge the police to sensitise the public on how to directly or indirectly fight the crime; otherwise, our children are becoming vulnerable to these ruthless criminals.
