Provide counselling services for smokers

By Geoffrey Ayeni

There has been so much debate about cigarette smoking, citing its effects on the consumer’s health. Yes smoking is harmful to one’s health but the ban on smoking must be handled carefully .

Cigarette smoking is an addiction and for it to be completely banned there is need for the government to come up with a solution to the addiction.
The government must start by opening up smoking rehabilitation centres in all the health facilities within the country where addicts get professional counselling.

Before writing this letter, I met a smoker who told me that his grandfather started smoking at the age of 17 and died at 92 when he was still smoking. He suggested that the government should avail counselling for the smokers. That way, they can gradually reduce consumption and eventually quit the habit. This will also give tobacco growers enough time to plan and resort to other cash crops.
