On March 10, one of our local TV stations aired a very disturbing documentary featuring the standard of various goods on the market.

Among the products were food condiments, detergents, disinfectants, bottled water, canned food and drinks. Then there was the sugar which had metal pieces in it.

The revelations were made after several inspections by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards in factories around Kampala.

It was disturbing to see the unhygienic surroundings in which the counterfeit products were packaged and the labels used to deceive the unsuspecting public. Even more disturbing, was the footage of businessmen trying to bribe UNBS officials without any shame.

The TV programme left me wondering whether the culprits were prosecuted. If a business is counterfeiting goods that threaten life, it should be closed, the directors and company must be publicly blacklisted.

UNBS please list all the companies in that documentary and others found lacking.
