I read a story in the Saturday Monitor of March 16 with bitterness because of the story titled, “Uganda tops Africa on alcohol consumption.”

It is ridiculous for a country which has just jubilated the 50 years of independence to be ranked in such shameful acts. I wonder whether we celebrated 50 years of independence or alcohol consumption.

How can Ugandans develop if all the money they should be using to invest in profitable ventures is squandered during drinking sprees? Alcohol is a trigger of many things such as domestic violence, school dropouts, loss of integrity by the consumers, diseases, the list is endless.

The Minister for Trade and Industry, Amelia Kyambadde should ensure that strict laws against the importation of alcohol are set because Uganda is losing repute.
If strict laws are set, the inflow of alcohol in the country could reduce. Bars should also be highly taxed.

MPs need to sensitise their constituents about the dangers of abusing alcohol.
Those in authority and not the consumers are to blame because the former just look on as alcohol is imported.
