Take the case of the Hon. Yokasi Bwambale, the Bukonjo East MP who ate Shs10 million that was supposed to be used to develop his constituency. Whereas Bwambale, a member of the FDC parliamentary caucus and of the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council, pleaded guilty to the crime nearly one month ago, I have not heard or read a statement by his party leaders demanding his resignation to pave way for a by-election. I am not aware of any reports that he has been asked to resign from his party’s top organs. Yet had he been an NRM leader, the opposition would have shouted themselves hoarse in demanding the immediate censure of the corrupt “big man”.

The President’s need to entrench and defend himself amid declining popularity, widening economic disparity, escalating corruption and other scandals has propelled him to rely on militarism, State violence, bribery and manipulation as the preferred means of governance. This, in turn, has pushed many citizens to nurture thoughts of violent response and a rejection of peaceful dialogue. Street protests, for example, have become a substitute for sober debate. The State has responded with violence against unarmed citizens. A vicious cycle has been set in motion, creating a political tornado with a potentially dangerous destination.

Instead of treating Gaddafi humanely and handing him over to the International Criminal Court, the liberators of Libya did exactly what they accused him of – ruthlessness and wanton murder. Instead of hauling him before the entire world for televised interrogation and shame, they turned him into a victim-of sorts that earned the pity of those of us who had nothing but contempt for him.
