Lugazi assured of violence-free LC3 polls

Buikwe

Herbert MugaggaThe business community in Lugazi town, Buikwe District, that expressed fear over alleged violence during today’s LC3 elections, has been assured of security.

The business community said their property could be destroyed if the polls turn chaotic like it was during the campaigns. Rallies by LC3 contenders Deo Tumwesigye (Ind) and the incumbent Asea JB Ozuma (SDP) have been chaotic with the police being forced to use teargas to calm their supporters.

“If the situation has been that bad during campaigns when people are supposed to be calm because they are vote hunting, how will it be like if one of those two is announced as loser? Won’t their supporters engage in violence that will affect our businesses?” asked Livingstone Nujguna of Lugazi town.

Some traders suggested that there should be heavy deployment of security personnel in the area today. ‘It’s only a blind person or one who has not witnessed the hooliganism exhibited during campaigns, who will under estimate Monday’s (today’s) situation,’’ said Joseph Sekandi. But the district police commander, Ms Caroline Akoth, said the police are ready for any eventuality.

“We are working together with other security agencies to ensure a peaceful exercise throughout the district. Whoever will be got engaging in violent activities will be dealt with accordingly,’’ said Akoth.
