Besigye defies EC on defiance campaign

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party presidential flag bearer Dr Kizza Besigye says he will continue with his “defiance campaign” despite warning by the Electoral Commission (EC) drop it or face the wrath of the law.

On Wednesday at their headquarters in Kampala, EC chairman Badru Kiggundu directed Dr Kizza Besigye to stop his “campaign of defiance,” saying it’s tantamount to inciting violence during the election period.

Mr Kiggundu added that if Dr Besigye doesn’t heed the EC’s directive, he will face the wrath of the law.
However, while addressing journalists at his home in Kasangati, Gayaza on Thursday morning, Besigye reiterated that a commission which is not independent and competent to conduct free and fair election stands no right to make such utterances.

“The Electoral Commission is not independent and not even competent to conduct a free and fair election. It has failed before,” Besigye said.

“I am not surprised at all by such utterances from the Commission, I suspect that these are utterances EC will be communicating on behalf of other authorities,” he added.

Dr Besigye has repeatedly on his campaign trail said the election will be won “not by compliance but by defiance.” He has also vowed not to go to court if there is vote-rigging, saying this will be sorted using people power.
