KAMPALA. The Electoral Commission (EC) chairman, Dr Badru Kiggundu, has repeated his earlier stance that Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye, is not “presidential material”.

Dr Kiggundu, speaking at a conference organised by a local NGO, Always Be Tolerant (ABETO), in recognition of peaceful campaigns at Protea Hotel, also said he has no apologies for saying if he had the powers he would not have nominated Dr Besigye as a presidential candidate.

“A presidential candidate should have some characteristics and behave in a manner fit to be a fountain of honour. But if you hear someone say I am going to have a defiance campaign, then why should you contest in that election?” Dr Kiggundu said.

“I think the law (Presidential Elections Act) should be tightened so that we do not have a minimum of Senior Six level, among others, for being nominated as a presidential candidate,” the EC boss added.

Abeto chairman Moses Musana said the event is part of peace campaigns that kicked off during nomination when the eight presidential candidates were given peace flags.

Turkish Ambassador to Uganda, Sedef Yavuzalp, who was chief guest, hailed Ugandans for being exemplary in the region and exercising mature politics.
