I opposed Museveni before Besigye did, says Biraro

The Farmers’ Party of Uganda presidential candidate Gen Benon Biraro, has said he opposed the leadership of President Museveni long before the FDC presidential candidate did.
Speaking during a talk show on Jinja-based NBS FM shortly after he addressed two rallies in Jinja at the weekend, Gen Biraro, said he first voiced his opposition to Mr Museveni in 1996.

He said although Dr Kizza Besigye rapidly emerged as a pillar of the Opposition, he was the first among the bush war fighters to take offence with Mr Museveni’s decision to cling onto power.

“In 1996 I told President Museveni that the 10 years he had been in leadership were enough and advised him to leave power for others,” said Gen Biraro.

The retired officer and one-time deputy principal private secretary to the President and secretary to both the High Command and National Resistance Council (NRC), warned that his former commander-in-chief and boss is likely to recreate conditions that sparked off the Luweero Bush War if he insists on clinging to power.

“You can see fire emerging within the NRM over party primary polls. Election rigging has continued, therefore we need to remove him from office before the situation gets out of hand,” Gen Biraaro said.

He accused Mr Museveni and the NRM of failure to address poverty, adding that his presidency would treat it with urgency.

Responding to questions about his ability to lead the country, Gen Biraro pointed at what he described as a clean track record that he has left in all the public offices he has held since 1986.

He also promised to reduce on the size of Parliament, a process which he said would begin with the scrapping of army MPs saying they are supposed to be neutral.
