NRM party supporters in Iganga District are today repeating elections for the positions of Member of Parliament flag bearers.

After the October 27 primaries, the party district registrar, Mr Yazid Kirunda, had declared the incumbent Iganga Municipality MP, Mr Peter Mugema, former LC5 chairman, Mr Asuman Kyafu, Mr Kyakulaga, and Ms Hairat Kaudha as winners of the polls in the Municipality, Kigulu South, Kigulu North and Iganga Women’s seats respectively.

Results annuled
However, the results were annulled by the party’s electoral commission (EC) after some of those who lost lodged petitions citing massive irregularities.

Initially, the polls were meant to have been repeated last Saturday, but they were deferred to today due to logistical problems and last Tuesday’s protests by sections of party supporters who marched on the streets protesting against what they called bias exhibited in the elections.

It is, however, not clear whether all of those who had earlier been declared winners will participate in today’s polls.
Mr Mugema and Mr Kyafu expressed willingness to participate in the process.

Confident
Mr Kyafu expressed his discontent with the directive to have the polls repeated, but he was confident that he would carry the day.

“The EC did not give us an opportunity to look at the petition that it received. We aren’t comfortable, but we have no choice. Nonetheless, we shall win,” Mr Kyafu said.
