Independent presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi has promised to improve incomes of households in Uganda during his tenure as president.

While addressing a campaign rally in Masindi Town yesterday, Mr Mbabazi asked people whether they still have poverty in their homes and the crowd chorused in affirmative.
“I will fight poverty from your homes and empower you to afford all your needs,” he said.

The former prime minister, who campaigned in Kibaale and Hoima districts on Wednesday, said he was shocked by the poor state of roads in Bunyoro.

“During my tenure in office, I will construct all your roads in this region,” Mr Mbabazi said at a rally at Masindi Boma grounds. He scoffed at government’s unfulfilled pledge of tarmacking the Kigumba-Hoima-Kyenjojo road. The road links Bunyoro and Tooro sub-regions to northern Uganda. Government’s failure to tarmac the road has been a major concern of many voters in the sub-region.
Mr Mbabazi also promised to increase power generation in the country and enable each homestead to access power unlike currently where about 88 per cent of the citizens do not have access to electricity.

“I will scrap all taxes on solar panels so that all Ugandans are able to purchase solar panels cheaply,” he said.
The former prime minister also promised to reduce State House expenditure and redirect the money to salaries of civil servants.
He also promised to set up government banks, stores and silos in each sub-county, revive cooperatives to enable farmers store their produce and have ready market for it.
He asked voters to turn up in big numbers and vote for him during the presidential elections.

“After casting your vote, stay at the polling station peacefully until the results of that polling station are declared,” he said.
