Kampala.
Members of the Uganda Sports Press Association (Uspa) will this morning converge at Lugogo to vote the overall Uspa/Nile Special sports personality of the year 2012.
The scribes will also pick their best sportsmen in the various disciplines that took place last year at the monthly assembly.
The best winners will then be crowned at the glamorous sports award gala set in Kampala at Imperial Royale Hotel on January 19.
Last year’s gala saw female rally driver Susan Muwonge crowned the best of 2011 after becoming the first woman to win the National Rally Championship (NRC) among male drivers.
This year, all odds show marathoner Stephen Kiprotich scooping the sports personality of the year award after claiming marathon Gold at the London Olympics, Uganda’s first since 1972 when John Akii-Bua (RIP) did it in the men’s 400m hurdles.
The sports journalists will also pick their best sports personality of the month of December and among those shortlisted are: Uganda Cranes team who beat Kenya’s Harambee stars 2–1 to retain the Cecafa Tusker Cup, Uganda girls cricket team that won the ICC Africa U-19 T20 Championship after scoring 38/9 to beat Tanzania for 37 to win by one wicket and Kyambogo Warriors Basketball Club for winning the Fuba men division I League after beating rivals Falcons 88-81 to win the best of seven series 4-2.
