KAMPALA. Moses Kipsiro will next week see his family for the first time in five months.
The Commonwealth Games 10,000m champion returns to Uganda on Sunday from Ireland where he has been undergoing treatment on his right calf, knee, thigh and back.
After he won Commonwealth gold in Glasgow last month, Kipsiro travelled to Kampala with Team Uganda but returned to Ireland after three days without proceeding to his home town, Bukwo.
“I miss my family a lot . It was so painful that I couldn’t see them when I came to Kampala because the doctor had ordered me to return to Ireland as soon as possible,” Kipsiro told Daily Monitor recently.
Before he competed at the Commonwealth Games, Kipsiro had spent several months undergoing treatment in Nairobi before being referred to the Hartmann International Sports Injury Clinic in Ireland.
Renowned doctor Gerard Hartmann, who has rejuvenated the careers of several top athletes, was shocked to learn that Kipsiro’s body had lost its alignment because of exerting too much pressure on the left side. “When he (the doctor) first tested me, he jokingly told me that I was like someone driving a car with a handbrake,” Kipsiro recollected. The doctor miraculously got him in shape to compete in Glasgow where he became the first runner to dominate the 10,000m title.
On August 21, the runner competed in the Stockholm Diamond League but finished last after developing a back problem. “The whole back was swollen the next day. I couldn’t even walk. But the doctor told me he expected it,” Kipsiro added. “I am now better. The pain has tremendously reduced.”
The runner will spend about a month in Bukwo before resuming training for the next season.
