What you need to know:

The most recent of his setbacks was when he failed to make the cut for the national amateur team that won the Africa Zone VI Championships on April 18.

KAMPALA- Ismail Mahmoodu hopes victory at the second edition of the Jinja Caddies Open held at the nine-hole par-72 Jinja Golf Club (JGC) course on April 27 will be the catalyst in reigniting his limping career back on track.

Mahmoodu is regarded as the best amateur golfer in Jinja but his reputation has lately been overshadowed by the fast-rising pair of Grace Kasango and Ronald Mabonga.

The pair have made it to the final leaderboards of several tournaments in the last 12 months as Mahmoodu settled for the back seat.

The most recent of his setbacks was when he failed to make the cut for the national amateur team that won the Africa Zone VI Championships on April 18.

And as the team made merry and received Shs3m each from President Yoweri Museveni for their heroics, Mahmoodu couldn’t have timed the moment better to remind the golfing fraternity that his candle still burns.

“My game has been inconsistent. But I am working on it and delighted the rewards are starting to come again,” said the 24-year-old soon after shooting 71 gross (four birdies & three bogeys) to edge a field of 80 caddies and artisans by five strokes.
