John Mugerwa and Diana Lenia shone brightest in the Uganda Technical College (UTC), Kichwamba Inter-house road runs last weekend.

Defending champion Mugerwa was a class apart in the men’s 16km mini-marathon, beating his closest rival John Birinawe (1:10.06) of Balya House by close to two minutes.

Crossing the line in one hour, 8.55 minutes, Mugerwa, however failed to spur his Kabalega House to overall honours as they finished a distant fourth with 71 points.

Mugurusi House took the team title with 31 points followed by Balya on 42 and Rwenzori on 49.

Lenia was unstoppable in the women’s 10km race, breaking the tape in one hour and 45 seconds to spur Whitehouse (17 points) to the team title. Second-placed Brenda Kabakama (1:03:29) was over three minutes slower.

The event, which spiced up life in the beautiful Fort Portal town, is part of Dr Moses Twesigye-omwe’s efforts to turn the college into a sports powerhouse. Since he moved to Kichwamba as Principal from Kyambogo University in 2010, Twesigye-omwe, a former national runner, has introduced internal competitions for his students.

He reckons the college will be on the same pedestal with other institutions in a few years to come.
