Nassuna wants schools title

Gulu- Soon after Kawempe Muslim SS kicked into life at the Brookside East Africa Secondary School Games, their star player declared her title intentions.

It had been a frustrating start for Kawempe, also the Uganda Women’s Elite League (UWEL) champions, until they authoritatively dispacted Rwanda’s GS Remera-Rukoma 3-0.
They had drawn their first two games until forward Hasifa Nassuna scored straight from two corners in the second half to crown a game they dominated and should have scored more.

The first was from the right wing with her left. The second was from the left wing with her right foot. In both cases, the ball evaded her teammates, the opposing players and goalkeeper.
And yes it was intentional for the reigning Ugandan women’s football of the year.

“It was intentional. I had watched the movement of the goalkeeper and she was always expecting crosses,” Nassuna, who got her first goals of the competition in that victory, told Daily Monitor after yesterday’s game.
You could see it in her eyes that the confidence is back for a team that last won this competition five years ago and have been earmarked by rivals from Kenya.

“In the first two games, we were unlucky but we are a very strong team. We can win the title and I think we have the potential to do so. We are number one,” a jovial Nassuna added.
Winger Sharon Apon got the other goal while Juliet Nalukenge missed two gilt-edged chances as Kawempe turned the screw in a bid to advance to the quarterfinals.
Ayub Khalifan, the coach, hasn’t looked as far ahead as Nassuna has but couldn’t hide his joy of advancing. “I think we deserve to be among the best teams and real work starts now,” he said. For many, this is not the strongest Kawempe but what of pedigree?
