KAMPALA. Two Ugandan athletes were disqualified on the opening day of the IAAF U-18 World Junior Championships at the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya. The disqualification Emmanuel Goni (200m) and Eric Layeng (400m) in the heats for lane infringement nearly trumped Uganda sending two athletes to the 1500m finals. Hosea Kiplangat (3.56.44) and Daniel Kiprop (3.58.68) posted sufficient times to book their places in the final.
In the 800m, Joshua Kibet ran a personal best of 1.53.31 to move into the 800m semifinals slated for today 5:40pm. His colleague Bekele Apenyo was knocked out.
“I briefed those boys on how to run before the competition but I think that has happened due to excitement because this is their first international tournament,” coach Moses Asenyo said.
More than 800 athletes are participating in this five-day global event opened by Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta. Uganda sent a team of 12 with two girls.
