Ugandan women fall to Czech at Universaide Games

By Elvis Kalema

TAIWAN- If there was one thing to note about the third day of competition at the World University games (Universiade) in Taipei, it was the fact that the Uganda Women’s basketball team can actually get it together, if only for three quarters.
In contrast to the wide margin they were beaten with by the United States on Monday afternoon, they rallied back in the game against the Czech republic who clearly outsized them to maintain an under ten point difference between them and their advantaged competitors scoring 15-25 in the first quarter and closing the second at 33-49. It is in the third quarter that the Czechs widened the lead to 64-44 and despite attempts by the game’s top scorer Ekone Brenda (19 points) to bridge the deficit for Uganda, the 10 minutes allotted for the last quarter wasn’t sufficient to allow a change of the tide.
The outcome of the last group game against Poland today (Wednesday) will determine whether the girls have any more games to play this tournament.
